The origin of this great god, Janus is shadowed in guesses and myth, but there is one story repeated through time. The parents of this god are unknown, at the time of his birth, it didn't matter because he didn't have nearly the meaning that he does now. He was one of a set of divine twins, Janus and Jana (Diana). They were thought of as the two sides of nature, mortal and immortal, past and future, time and movement. They were joined to create a two faced god, Janus.
The set of divine twins had been represented as two pillars on the east side of a Roman temple to the gods and goddesses. When Jana and Janus were transformed into today's Janus, the pillars were joined into one statue of this two faced god. The two heads and the new powers Janus gained from this change helped him to become as important as he is. Some statues and pictures show him with two identical heads, (left) but he is also pictured with a face of Janus and a face of Jana (Diana).
